Power Failure - God forcing us to be romantic ?
We were in the movies, ready and excited to watch Mamma Mia, we had our popcorn and slush puppy and the adds were carrying on forever. The Havanna Club add came on and I knew we were close to the start of the movie. When out of the blue and into the darkness the power went out. As we walked out of the cinema we noticed everyone around us was sitting in total darkness and only the candles were lighting up the mall romantically.
We were of course a little disappointed and with our complimentery tickets in hand we walked out into the gusty winds and rainstorm into a very dark and gloomy town. I was a little irretated with the situation but I really hung on to the fact that there was simply much ado about nothing. So we headed out to the beach and sat at the ocean with nothing much to see. We saw the ocean in front of us peeking through the thick cloud and just barely noticed the lighthouse on Robbin Island. The only thing we could see of the City of Cape Town was the lighthouse and now and then a light or two peeking through the mist and rainfall. It was kinda romantic and as I listened to the drops falling on our car I rhythmically enchanted the negative and irritable thoughts into productive ones. We headed back home, it was after all our anniversary and we had to eat. Failing to have a romantic dinner in a restaurant and without electricity we had to make the best of what seemed a gloomy evening.
We lit all the candles I could find and with the rain billowing against our windows the tin food actually looked great in the shadow of the burning light flickering all around us bouncing off the walls. Our wine glasses were illuminated and I imagined a bunch of red roses standing there.
I had a strange feeling that it was God’s work after all. He wanted the entire town to stop and think what their lives were before all the technology and fast paced instant gratification. What our lives were before fast foods and Tele, what it was before we had light switches and fancy restaurants. He wanted us to stop and watch the rain, use what nature naturally gives us through its beauty and just listen to the sound of the rain, the wind and the waves. It was God’s work that night, he was forcing us to be romantic. To fall asleep with only the sound of the rain and the gushing of the wind.
So next time you are forced out of your comfort zone please stop and think of why it might be happening in stead of swearing at Eskom or the Government for your discomfort. You will be a happier person for it and just maybe be silent enough to hear what the world is telling you. The voice might just be divine and a miracle might just happen..
