Band of Brothers
I have been watching the Band of Brothers series on DVD the last couple of days and I have just realized how little I know about what has shaped our world. And I don’t mean our divine world which our Lord Jesus Christ created. I am talking about the battles that have been fought throughout the years, the wars and suffering the past has faced. All the millions of lives lost and forgotten by a war in which no one really knows what they are fighting for. I would love for the rebelling children of today to be forced to watch this movie, or read this book, instead of Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet. World War 1 and World War 2 were tragic wars not to mention the other dozen I really know nothing about. I have seen some depicted in Hollywood movies, like saving Private Ryan and the Vietnam wars. But I don’t know the real story. Band of Brothers directed by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks have truly open up my eyes and has spoken to my heart about what happened in the 1940’s in the two World Wars. Hitler’s cruelty was insanely unfathomable and I am sickened to my stomach to see this miniseries which helped me to understand what those men and woman went through.
I don’t think I will ever truly understand but the miniseries has visually made it real to me. Millions of people died, not only the Jews and this was all the work of Hitler. I can only imagine where he is today, like a coward he shot himself 3 years too late. Young soldiers lost their legs, lost their lives and lost their sanity fighting a war this psycho started. Young men and woman were locked up in camps because of their ethnic status. They died and were experimented on, they died of starvation. When the Soldiers showed Major Winters the camp they had discovered the soldiers were all sickened and crying with what they saw. Hundreds of dead bodies strewn across this dreadful camp, skeletons of the dead and the walking. The stench in the air and the bodies packed into little dog houses made the soldiers look in total astonishment, total disgust and sympathy. They had to cover their mouths. The citizens in the area thought the news an exaggeration. It was only until they were summoned to bury the bodies and they were there at the camp did they understand the gravity of the situation. Unaware like you and me, they gawked at the men that were lying dead in heaps in front of them.
The Battle of the Bulge, do you understand D-day, Bastogne, Normandy, Easy Company, do you know of Major Winters. Do you care to know? I am sure if you watch this amazing recollection of what these soldiers went through to make the world what it is today you would go down on your knees and thank them. You would open up your home for them. They depended on each other and the world depended on them. They had to, like Major Winters always said to them, “Hang Tough”, and they did. The irony, Hitler wasn’t killed by the war he started he cowardly ran away from this hell and he shot himself.
Hiding in fox holes they hid away from the exploding trees, shivering with no winter clothes and no food and limited artillery. Watching their best friend’s legs being blown off, another friend shot in the neck bleeding and choking in their own blood. They saw and experienced things that would haunt them throughout their lives and all of their dreams. If they survived they lived with the memories. What are we complaining about today, why are we killing, why are our people starving, fighting, dying ?
I sit in awe and I am filled with respect and admiration for all these men and woman who had to endure the World Wars, or any war for that matter. I am sorry that you have to go through all of this. I am sorry that now we face crime, woman and children are being beaten and raped, people getting hijacked, stolen from, and killed in their own homes by thieves that come in the night. I am watching the devil running rampant and I am watching in the comfort of my own home the miniseries that made the World War 11 come alive in my heart and soul. And I can just sit here and imagine what my life could have been like if I had to live in those years. And I am thankful, very thankful, for what I have and what I feel inside of my heart. Freedom, choice and love.
To all the soldiers out there, dead and alive I commend you !
